My #BossCrushWednesday for today is spoken word artist, fashion and culture Blogger from New Orleans by the name Mwende "FreeQuency" Katwiwa, Performing nationally and internationally. Noirlinians is an AfroFashion blog exploring the complex relationship between culture, clothing & identity in the diaspora. Featured as "Feminists you should know" by the FM-Foundation, Mwende "FreeQuency" Katwiwa also appeared in the New York Times, the Huffington Post, All Def Poetry and more.

Noirlinians est un blog de AfroFashion qui explore la relation complexe entre la culture, l'habillement et l'identité dans la diaspora. Présenté comme «Féministes que vous devez connaitre" par la FM-Fondation, Mwende "FreeQuency" Katwiwa a également apparu dans New York Times, le Huffington Post, All Def Poetry et encore plus.

One heart, two passions

Mwende "FreeQuency" Katwiwa is a Kenyan born, New Orleans based spoken word artist. In 2013, FreeQuency was voted the RAW New Orleans Performing Artist of the Year and the WhoDat Poets Rookie of the Year. It all started in middle school when her mom took her to a performance by a group of youth artists and activists call "Project 2050", "seeing them on the stage telling their stories made me believe mine was worth sharing as well, I began writing soon after that and joining the group". She did 3 performances while in kenya, screening of the film “Concerning Violence” a piece about colonization, a showcase with 4 other Kenyan women poets, and an Open Mic at KNT.

In her own words: "Noirlinians is an AfroFashion and culture blog based in New Orleans that is run by myself and my good friend Denisio Truitt, founder of DOPEciety. At first it was just a friendly project that we wanted to do to explore the connections we immediately made to one another based on our African heritage while living in New Orleans, but its turned into a connection space for Africans living in New Orleans through our monthly potlucks, as well as a meet up and culture sharing space through our Meet Up/Pop Up shops and other events.

The purpose of the blog itself was to write out our experiences of being African in America and winding up in the most African city we’ve experienced and what that means to us as well as to the Black photographers who tell a story through their photos and their location choices."

Un cœur, deux passions

Mwende "FreeQuency" Katwiwa est une artiste poète né kényane basé à New Orleans. En 2013, FreeQuency a été élu "Performing Artist RAW de la Nouvelle-Orléans" et "the WhoDat Rookie" poètes de l'année. Tout a commencé au collège quand sa mère l'a emmenée à un spectacle par un groupe d'artistes et de jeunes appeler «Projet 2050», «les voir sur la scène racontant leurs histoires m'a fait croire la mienne aussi mérite d'être partagée, j'ai commencé à écrire et j'ai rejoins le groupe peu de temps après". Elle a fait 3 performances l'ors de sa visite au Kenya, sur la projection du film "En ce qui concerne la violence" un morceau sur la colonisation, une performance avec 4 autres femmes poètes kényanes, et un open-mic à KNT.

Elle explique: "Noirlinians est un blog d'AfroFashion et de la culture, basée en Nouvelle-Orléans qui est géré par moi-même et mon amie Denisio Truitt, fondateur de DOPEciety. Au début, il c'était juste un projet convivial que nous voulions faire pour explorer les liens que nous avons immédiatement fait l'un à l'autre sur la base de notre héritage africaine vivant en Nouvelle Orléans, mais qui c'est transformé en un espace de connexion pour les Africains vivant en Nouvelle Orléans à travers nos evenements mensuels, ainsi qu'une rencontres sur la culture et des partage l'ors de nos meet-up ou a notre magasins et d'autres événements.

Le but du blog lui-même était de relater nos expériences d'être africaine en Amérique et vivre dans la ville la plus africaine, ce que cela signifie pour nous ainsi que pour les photographes noirs qui tous racontent une histoire à travers leurs photos et leurs choix de localisation. "
